Bashas' raises more than $29,000 for TMC Pediatric Endocrinology
Throughout the month of March, Bashas' supermarkets are collecting donations at the register to help fund critical life-changing type 1 diabetes treatments, support services and research. TMC is proud to be a recipient of these donations. Last year, Bashas' raised $29,107.59 for TMC Pediatric Endocrinology.
These funds have enabled the clinic to consistently hold gatherings for teens to interact with others in their age group who also have diabetes. Activities have included escape room adventures, Taiko drumming lessons and bowling.
“This provides a pathway for discussion and normalization of having to inject insulin with every meal and every snack,” said Chetan Patel, M.D., medical director of TMC Pediatric Endocrinology. “This is a group that facilitates year-long fostering of relationships where, unlike the annual one-day diabetes camp, they continue to build relationships and mentor those that need help.”
Now, thanks to the support of Bashas’ and the TMC Health Foundation, TMC Pediatric Endocrinology has an elementary-aged group that recently gathered for an event at Reid Park Zoo to meet other families with children living with type 1 diabetes.
“More than 100 guests attended this event which aimed to give families an opportunity to create relationships with others who understand their situation and can relate to their difficulties and challenges in life,” Dr. Patel said. “Having these relationships is important because they can help improve self-management, coping strategies and overall well-being.”
Lastly, funds raised by Bashas’ has helped TMC Pediatric Endocrinology improve the workstations for diabetes educators who work to ensure that all patients and their families are educated on diabetes and have everything they need to help manage it.
“We are incredibly grateful to the efforts of Bashas’ and all of its stores in helping collect money dedicated to children with diabetes mellitus,” Dr. Patel said.
