“The goal of surgery is to reduce pain—ideally to the point where there is no pain in the knee or hip,” said Dr. Gens Goodman, board-certified orthopaedic surgeon. “We want to improve the patient's quality of life, allowing them to enjoy activities like hiking, walking through the grocery store, or getting back on their bicycle.”
In 2024, Dr. Goodman performed the most surgeries at Tucson Medical Center, conducting 813 procedures. On average, he and a surgical team completed 8 to 10 joint replacements each day.
Dr. Goodman specializes in hip and knee replacements, including revision surgeries, at Tucson Orthopaedic Institute.
A Tucson native, Dr. Goodman graduated cum laude from the University of Arizona. While Dr. Goodman excelled in the classroom, he also exceeded on the football field, playing wide receiver for the University of Arizona. He was named to the 2002 All-Pac 10 conference academic team. As a wide receiver, he further developed his hand-eye coordination which would prove useful in the operating room.
Dr. Goodman went on to graduate in the top 5 of his class at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pennsylvania. He earned the F. Edward Hebert Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship and was commissioned into the U.S. Army. After graduating with academic honors from medical school, Dr. Goodman completed his five-year orthopaedic surgery training in the Army’s premier orthopaedic surgery residency program at William Beaumont Army Medical Center/Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso, Texas. After residency, he completed a fellowship in adult reconstruction at the prestigious Anderson Orthopedic Institute in Alexandria, Virginia.
Dr. Goodman deployed twice to Iraq as an orthopedic surgeon—once in 2016 and again in 2019. He credits his military service with shaping his career in orthopaedic medicine.
“We had the chance to use groundbreaking technology, from prosthetics to amputation techniques,” Dr. Goodman said. “I saw firsthand what wartime medicine was like, which was unfortunate, but it helped me grow as a person.”
Dr. Goodman's life experience and commitment to improving his patients' quality of life makes him a trusted leader in the field of orthopaedics at TMC.
"TMC is an incredible partner, Dr. Goodman said. "The relationship and the partnership that TMC and Tucson Orthopaedic Institute have together is incredible."
