When you’re not the principal of a school by trade, stepping into those shoes can be an eye-opening experience.

Heather Beck, Administrator, TMC Rincon, got to experience this first-hand when she was invited to participate in the Tucson Values Teachers Principal for a Day program which gives leaders in different sectors the chance to shadow a school principal for a day. This year’s partner for the program was the Vail School District.

Beck shadowed the principal at Copper Ridge Elementary School in Corona de Tucson. The day started early, with a review of the schedule, meetings with staff and ensuring everything was running smoothly. Responsibilities range from administrative tasks to engaging with students and addressing their needs.

“One of the most rewarding aspects was the direct interaction with students,” Beck said. “Listening to their ideas, concerns and aspirations provided valuable insights into their world. I even got a few hugs from some of the students.”

This experience showed Beck that education and health care have more in common than she initially thought.

“There is an interconnectedness between health and education,” she said. “Healthy students are better learners, and schools play a critical role in promoting the well-being of children.”

When given opportunities like this, Beck said it’s important for health care leaders to participate because they can identify areas where health and education professionals can collaborate on initiatives that benefit both sectors. For example, they can advocate for better mental health resources in schools, promote physical activities, and support programs that address nutrition and healthy lifestyles.

“Educators and business leaders in the community can work to develop more effective strategies to address health disparities and support holistic approaches to student well-being,” Beck said. “This is a win for all as it is a win for our community and its future.”
